Printing Plate Costs

One-Time Cost & Archive
When do you pay?
How plates are made -
No witchcraft, just pure science!
How your plate gets made
Digital prep → laser cutting → cleaning → done. Your millimeter-accurate printing matrix is ready. The foundation of flexographic printing is the printing plate, also called a matrix. This is what transfers your design onto the tape. It's made from a highly flexible, durable polymer material. Sounds like something from Victor's lab - but it's actually modern high-tech, minus the thunderstorm and the weird assistant.
To produce the plate, your design is first prepared digitally and then laser-cut from the polymer with millimeter precision. The areas that will print stay raised, while everything else is cleanly removed - like a monster sculptor freeing only what matters from the raw material. After cutting, the plate is cleaned and ready to roll. The result: a millimeter-accurate printing matrix with raised surfaces that reproduce your artwork exactly.
Plate quality has a direct impact on your print result. That's why our control monsters at Tapemonster stick to high-precision plate production that delivers perfect output even on the tiniest details. The best part? Plates are reusable - like a werewolf at full moon, they keep coming back for more!
Pay once, reuse forever
You pay once to produce the plate and can reuse it as many times as you want. Production costs apply only once, as long as your design stays identical in shape and color.Standard vs. Sleeve -
Two plates, two print results.
What is a printing plate?
To print your design perfectly onto the tape, we need a plate - also known as a printing matrix. It's made from your digital artwork and works like a stamp that transfers your motif onto the tape. It's reusable for every future reorder.Standard Plate
Designs without background color
- A small gap sits between motifs (seam)
- Tape base color serves as the background
- Patterns and lines get interrupted at the seam
- Artwork length up to 502 mm
Sleeve Plate
Designs with background color
- Prints seamlessly - no visible seam between motifs
- Custom background color instead of the raw tape color
- Continuous patterns and lines without breaks
- Laser-engraved onto a full cylinder instead of a flat plate
- Artwork length 314 mm
Here's how it looks on the actual tape
Same print, two worlds - the difference really shows up on the roll.
Small seam (1–2 mm)
Standard plate - the signature monster mini-seam between motifs.
Smart design
Plan ahead: the seam becomes part of the design instead of a stumbling block.
Full-coverage background
Sleeve plate - seamless, gapless, monster-rich color.
Why Sleeve -
The monster solution for full-coverage printing!
Want to print your tape in a full background color or with an all-over design that'd make Godzilla jealous? Then the sleeve plate is your pick. This isn't a nice-to-have - it's a must.
A sleeve plate is a seamless, cylindrical printing form that wraps evenly across the full width of the press. Picture it: a cylindrical monster hugging your roll from edge to edge - no gaps, no transitions. Unlike flat or segmented plates, the sleeve delivers even print distribution and prevents any visible seams or tolerances at the joints.
With full-coverage colors, even the tiniest inconsistency jumps out - more ruthless than a basilisk stare. Thanks to the uniform pressure of the sleeve and its gapless wrap around the cylinder, we guarantee you a perfectly clean, consistent, and professional result - no streaks, no interruptions, no brightness shifts.
Bonus monster fact: the sleeve material is extra dimensionally stable and long-lasting. That's a huge win on large runs or high-speed print jobs - the sleeve just keeps going, no matter how many rolls you order. If your design features a solid background color or full-coverage print, the sleeve plate is the only professional answer for a flawless print result.
When do plate costs apply -
The honest monster rule.
A plate is a one-time purchase, not a recurring fee. Costs apply whenever a new or modified design needs to go into production. Sound fair? It is.
| Situation | Do plate costs apply? |
|---|---|
| First order of a new design | Yes - once per print color |
| Full-coverage print or background color | Yes - sleeve plate |
| Reorder with identical artwork | No - plate gets reused |
| Change to shape, lines, or colors | Yes - new plate needed |
| Small color adjustment | Maybe - ask us, it's worth it |
Archiving & Reuse
Your plate stays with us - free of charge
Once your plate is laser-cut, it heads straight into our plate archive. There it sleeps like a well-behaved werewolf during daylight, waiting to crawl back out of the crypt for your next order. Storage doesn't cost you a cent - our control monster keeps watch for free.
Small monster note: As long as your design stays identical in shape and color, no new plate costs apply to reorders. You really pay for your plate only once - whether you reorder in three weeks or three years. Can't get fairer than that - even Frankenstein's monster would sign off on this.
